We all face challenges and futures we don’t expect – I am no exception.
Whether it is something that knocks our confidence or something that fundamentally alters the way we see ourselves, the way we are in relationships and/or the way we are with others. We need space and a place to stop, assess, try to understand and maybe try and adapt our behaviour.
I am a Relate trained counsellor and relationship specialist for individuals, couples and families. I worked as a Relate counsellor 2014 – 2020.
Due to the deterioration of a long-term balance condition it became necessary to retrain as a counsellor in 2013 so I could work locally. This was an adaptation to my future. This is a physical disability and, unfortunately, I became wheelchair-bound in 2018. This was an unexpected development to my family’s future.
I was suprised by quite how undervalued, uncatered for and difficult life is for a wheelchair bound disabled person. Additionally, I became more aware of the importance of my sense of self worth, my need to cope and change. These are common factors for people seeking counsellling and may allow me a deeper understanding and empathy.
One impact is that I now work from home through Accessible Online Counselling.
Prior to becoming a Relate trained counsellor, I had a career in London as a Compliance and Risk specialist in a bank for 13 years.
I live in Hampshire with my family and dog.
